How to Have a 'Hyggelig' Christmas

When the cold winds blow, nothing warms the heart more than a soft couch, warm blankets and a bowl of hot soup, perhaps enjoyed by candlelight at Christmas time.

That is the seductive principle called "hygge" or cozy in Scandinavia that has taken the world by storm and created a little domestic science all of its own.

A key element is rugs and carpets that keep the feet warm and prevent the cold from creeping in. They can also cover a sofa or chair.

Sleek cushion covers can be replaced with those made of light, soft wool fabrics or shaggy sheepskin, preferably in relaxing colors on the greige spectrum.

Candles create extra coziness and warmth in a home. Putting scented candles or tealights around the room adds a romantic atmosphere and makes you feel protected from the cold and dark outside.
