The bitter cold snap will grip the country all week under the influence of a cold air mass from the north.

The mercury plummeted to -8 degrees Celsius in Seoul on Monday morning as a cold air mass of -35 degrees blew into the skies 5 km above the northern Korean Peninsula from Siberia.

It will dip further on Monday evening and plunge to -12 degrees on Tuesday morning, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

Tourists walk in the snow in Gwanghwamun, Seoul on Sunday.

The cold snap will peak on Tuesday, with temperatures plummeting to -17 degrees in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, -16 degrees in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, and -12 degrees in Seoul, a whopping 10 degrees lower than the 30-year average.
