Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon smiles at the Community Chest of Korea in Seoul on Thursday.

Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday donated W100 million to the Community Chest of Korea (US$1=W1,095).

"This is the biggest spend in my life since I bought my house. I feel nervous about it, but it gives me a pleasant shiver at the same time," Ban said.

"When I worked for the UN, I always said we should make the world better for all, and I did work hard at the UN for 10 years to help the needy and the less fortunate throughout the world," he added. "Now that I've been back in Korea for nearly a year, I think I should help underprivileged in my own country."

Ban said Korea "is not a poor country anymore, but still there are many people who need help and support. Mine is not a great deal of money, but I hope it can encourage more Koreans to share their fortune with people in need."
