Research suggests that the bird flu virus detected at a poultry farm in Gochang, North Jeolla Province earlier this month could be a new strain, a combination of highly pathogenic strains that spread in Europe last year.
The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency on Monday said it is possible the virus was carried by migratory birds making their way from Europe to Korea.
Genomic analysis showed a new variation of the H5N6 strain, different from those detected since a massive outbreak here last year.
The agency said it is looking for a link between the Gochang strain and the one discovered Sunday in wild bird droppings on the southern island of Jeju.
