Mercedes-Benz has posted its highest annual sales in Korea since it entered the market here in 2002. It has sold more than 60,000 cars so far this year, becoming the first foreign carmaker to achieve the feat.
The German carmaker saw its sales until October this year rise 30 percent on-year to 58,060 cars. Its November sales reached some 5,000, bringing the total to over 60,000, industry sources said on Sunday. It was the best-selling imported brand last year, too, with sales of 56,343 cars.
The performance was driven by the completely revamped E Class, which was released in June last year. The new E Class sold 28,492 cars in the first 10 months of this year and is expected to exceed 30,000 in annual sales. No single model of an imported car brand has yet reached the milestone.
Sales of Mercedes-Benz's SUVs are also on the rise. The carmaker sells seven SUV models here, including the new GLC coupe, which was launched in April, and their combined sales stood at 9,985 cars until October, up 34 percent on-year.
Korea became the fifth-largest market for Mercedes-Benz in terms of sales this year, after China, the U.S., Germany and Britain. "Its yearly sales in Korea are expected to surpass those in Japan for the first time this year," said a company staffer.
