The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Monday confirmed that a highly pathogenic strain of avian flu has been found in wild bird droppings in the southern part of the country.

The discovery comes just a day after the first bird flu case of the winter was detected at a poultry farm in Gochang, North Jeolla Province on Sunday. It was identified as the highly pathogenic strain H5N6.

The ministry says the contaminated droppings were found in Suncheon, about 400 km south of Seoul.

Contaminated droppings were also found in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, some 200 km east of the capital, and officials will check if it is highly pathogenic. The result is expected toward the end of the week.
