A highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza was reported on a duck farm in Gochang, North Jeolla Province on Sunday.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs put all poultry farms off limits to visitors on Monday and Tuesday in order to contain the spread of the virus.

Over 37 million chickens and ducks across the country had to be culled last winter because of bird flu.

The ministry said Sunday, "We tested the strain of bird flu sampled at a farm in Gochang on Saturday, and the results confirmed that it is highly pathogenic, so we raised the warning level, while banning travel to all poultry farms there for a week to conduct disinfecting of the area."

    All 12,300 ducks were culled.

Quarantine authorities hope to prevent the further spread of bird flu as there is no other poultry farm within a 500 m radius, but are on alert because there is a reservoir known to be a habitat for migratory birds nearby.
