A high-ranking North Korean defector is in the U.S. for his first visit since escaping to South Korea last year.
Thae Yong-ho, who was Pyongyang's deputy ambassador to the U.K, spoke at a public event in Washington on Tuesday where he called for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Thae will also appear before Congress to share his view of the North Korean nuclear issue with the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The former diplomat is one of the most senior North Korean officials to defect to South Korea, and has given numerous speeches and interviews on the threats posed by the North.
