Instant noodles will carry labels showing how spicy they are from next year.

Koreans eat huge amounts of instant noodles annually, averaging at 71 packets a year, and the market is worth W2 trillion (US$1=W1,129). But consumers can be in for a surprise since each brand has very different levels of spiciness.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Wednesday said degrees of spiciness will be classified into four levels depending on the amount of capsaicin on the Scoville scale.

Level 1 (mild) contains less than 80 ppm of capsaicin, level 2 (regular) 80 to 180 ppm, level 3 (spicy) 180 to 280ppm and level 3 (very spicy) more than 280 ppm.

The ministry also believes the labeling will help foreign consumers.
