Korean composer Chin Un-suk won the 20th Wihuri Sibelius Prize in Helsinki, Finland on Monday.
Founded in 1953, the Wihuri Sibelius Prize is only awarded when there is a nominee worthy of the prize and is one of the world's most prestigious for composers.
Previous laureates include Paul Hindemith, Dmitri Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Olivier Messiaen and Krzysztof Penderecki.
Chin, who has been composer-in-residence and artistic advisor for the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra since 2006, is the first Asian laureate. The prize money is 150,000 euros.
