What you do first thing in the morning can have a huge impact on your day. The body goes through changes on waking up as it relaxes and dopamine gets discharged to lift people's mood. Good habits in the morning can help maintain a healthy disposition for the rest of the day.

      ◆ Stretching

When you wake up in the morning, don't get up immediately but take a moment for simple stretching. It will help you wake up, and relax your muscles and joints.

Lift your arms and legs up in the air and shake them to stimulate blood circulation. If you have time, go for a run for 20 to 30 minutes -- an excellent way to destress as it boosts the discharge of feel-good hormones such as dopamine and endorphin.

      ◆ Opening the Windows

It is important to make the room bright and airy to wake up, so open the windows and let the sunlight in. Light halts discharge of melatonin, which makes you feel sleepy, and stimulates adrenaline, which helps with waking up. By letting fresh air in, your lungs will stay healthy.

      ◆ Drinking Water

If you drink water as soon as you get up, the digestive tract will start moving. Bowels move well when there is plenty of water, so having a cup of water before breakfast greatly improves digestion and relieve constipation.

Caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea are not recommended. Cortisol, a hormone that wakes the brain up, gets secreted in the morning anyway, so caffeine can cause a state of excessive alertness, which can be accompanied by headache, stomach ache, and pounding heart.
