A ceremony was held on Wednesday in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province to celebrate the opening of a new training center for national athletes.
It replaces the Taeneung National Training Center in Seoul, which has served the national athletes since 1966.
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon said in a congratulatory speech, "Taeneung was the cradle of Korean elite sports. Now, in Jincheon, we hope Korean sports will continue to flourish."
Some 2,000 people attended the ceremony, and athletes expressed their hopes to preserve the Taeneung center in honor of the history of Korean sports, which earned 116 Olympic gold medals in the past 51 years.
