Heavy rains and gale-force winds will pound Jeju as typhoon Talim, this year's 18th, passes the resort island on its way northward on Friday night.
Talim was moving north with a maximum wind speed of 39 m/s as of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. It is expected to grow stronger with wind speeds of up to 45 to 47 m/s on Thursday and Friday.
The typhoon, however, will weaken slightly when it reaches about 340 km south-southwest of Seogwipo on Saturday, but still maintain the wind speed of 39 m/s. It will likely make landfall on the Japanese island of Kyushu but could still change its course and move closer to the Korean Peninsula.
"Talim is expected to approach remote waters south of Jeju around Saturday night, hitting the offshore area directly and the island indirectly," a KMA official said.
