Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis has sold over 20,000 cars in the U.S. in the year since it was launched there.
Genesis said Wednesday it has sold 20,698 cars there from August last year to July this year. It sold 17,206 G80s and 3,483 G90s, known as the EQ900 in Korea. That translates into an average of 1,600 to 2,000 per month.
In terms of market share, Genesis accounted for 8.2 percent of medium-to-large luxury sedans sold in the U.S. over the period. To boost the brand, Hyundai now wants to make Genesis independent from the mothership.
