It's not just humans who are suffering from the prolonged heat wave here, as livestock have taken a heavy toll as well.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on Wednesday, more than 2.7 million livestock, mostly poultry, have died in the sizzling temperatures. The mass deaths began late last month, when heat wave advisories were issued across the nation amid the sweltering weather. Chickens were the worst affected, since they are raised in hot and cramped conditions.
An official from the ministry advised farmers to set up facilities to prevent heat-related damages and make sure they are insured against such losses.
