Electric cars are expected to go on sale in super stores as early as October this year. E-Mart on Wednesday said it is set to open a showroom for electric cars at its chain in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province this week and start pre-orders ahead of the release slated for October.
It plans to sell the D2, a two-seater electric car made by Zhidou, the second largest carmaker in China.
The D2 can travel 150 km on a single charge, and can run up to 80 km/h. The price is expected to be around W22 million, but with subsidies from provincial authorities, consumers may purchase the car at a much cheaper price between W10 million and W15 million (US$1=W1,121).
Renault Samsung's Twizy is the only two-seater electric car available in the market here. The D2 would be slightly more expensive than the Twizy, but comes with more convenient features.
"After looking at the market's response for the D2, we will consider whether to expand the lineup," a spokesman at E-Mart said.
E-Mart will also open another showroom in the new Starfield shopping mall in Goyang in Gyeonggi Province, which opens next month.
E-Mart opened charging stations for electric cars for the first time here in 2001 and currently runs over 200 of them at its 116 stores nationwide.
