Record rainfall drenched central parts on Sunday, killing at least two people in North Chungcheong Province and leaving several missing. Floods and landslides left around 500 people homeless.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Cheongju saw 290.2 mm of rain on Sunday alone, a record for the month of July and the most in 22 years.
A local official said, "We recently completed storage tanks that can withstand 80 mm of rainfall an hour, but we never expected this much."
Cheonan in South Chungcheong Province saw 232.7 mm of rainfall on Sunday.
Overcast skies are forecast for Monday with patchy showers across the nation, according to the KMA. Between five to 40 mm of rain is expected throughout the nation except Jeju Island and South Gyeongsang Province.
