Samsung and LG will unveil new smartphones in late August and put them on sale two or three weeks later.
Samsung said it is unveiling the Galaxy Note 8 in New York on Aug. 23 because the city leads the world's tech trends.
Samsung used to introduce its Note series of "phablets" at the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin in September from 2011 to 2014. But since the company shifted the launch date to August in 2015 to get a head start on Apple's release of new iPhones in September, it began launching the handsets in New York.
But LG will unveil its flagship V30 at the IFA. LG on Thursday invited reporters from around the world to the launch in Berlin, which will be held on Aug. 31, a day before the show kicks off.
The new handset is the third in the V series, and the first time the company is unveiling its flagship smartphone at the show.
