North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Wednesday praised officials for sending a "package of gifts" to "American bastards" on their July 4 Independence Day with the test launch of what he claims was an intercontinental ballistic missile.
The comment came from a report by the North's official Korean Central News Agency CNA and confirms that it meant to make a splash on the U.S. national holiday.
It quoted Kim as saying that the Hwasong-14 missile "looked as handsome as a good-looking boy and was well made" and vowing never to give up his nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles until the U.S. ends its "hostile policy" against the North.
KCNA said Kim flashed a "broad smile" and jokingly encouraged officials to "frequently send big and small 'gift packages' to the Yankees."
He added that the drawn-out confrontation with the U.S. had reached its "final stage." He claimed the North's "strategic position reached a new level through the possession of an atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb and intercontinental ballistic missile."
The state media report did not mention South Korea and only addressed the U.S.
Yang Moo-jin at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul said, "President Moon Jae-in said recently that South Korea wants to take the leading role in tackling problems on the Korean Peninsula, but North Korea has made it clear that it does not place much importance on Seoul. This was a message to the international community that the North and not the South has got the initiative."
