The father of Ryu So-yeon, who became the top-ranked female golfer in the LPGA last month, is embroiled in an angry spat with the tax authorities.
Yoo Chang-hee has belatedly paid more than W300 million in back taxes but did not part lightly with the money and sent threatening texts to the tax official in charge of collecting the money (US$1=W1,150).
On April 20, tax officials from the Seoul Metropolitan Government raided the homes of people who owed more than W10 million in taxes, and among the delinquents was Yoo.
City officials said Yoo owed a large amount of taxes while living in a luxury home and owning another two apartments worth billions of won that were registered in the names of his children.
Yoo was furious and sent a text message to one tax official that read, "You have a family too, yes?"
Last week, he sent another text that read, "Watch out for cars when you go to work" and called the official twice to tell him, "I've done a background check on your family. Is your daughter okay?"
After Yoo paid the W316 million in back taxes last month, the tax official in charge sent him a text message thanking him, but Yoo replied with a stream of invective.
He has now filed a complaint with the government claiming that the statute of limitations on the taxes had expired.
