Veteran actor Shin Sung-il said Wednesday that he has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer.
"I underwent tests in hospital in Daegu and Seoul after I started coughing blood about a month ago," Shin (80) told the Chosun Ilbo on Wednesday.
"I felt crushed when the doctors told me they suspected cancer. The test results fortunately showed that the cancer had not spread to other parts of my body."
He is to begin chemo and radiation therapy on Friday. "I have to have therapy for five weeks to shrink the tumor and then decide whether to have surgery," he said.
His wife and veteran actress Um Aing-ran (81) also had surgery for breast cancer in 2015.
Shin nonetheless plans to attend a retrospective of his works at this year's Busan International Film Festival in October, but he decided to postpone his film project until next year.
Shin debuted in 1960 and has starred in more than 500 movies. He recently appeared on a show on TV Chosun about his life in the remote village of Yeongcheon in North Gyeongsang Province.
