Samsung will spend W700 billion to expand its plant in India to deal with growing demand for its products in the country and neighboring Southwest Asian markets.

The Korean electronics giant said Sunday that it is starting to build new production facilities for mobile phones and home appliances in its plant in Uttar Pradesh in northern India.

When construction is completed by the end of this year, the 120,000 sq.m plant will double in size, while its monthly output capacity will rise from 5 million to 10 million mobile phones and from 100,000 to 200,000 refrigerators.

In October last year, Samsung signed a memorandum of understanding on the factory expansion with the state government. The original investment was earmarked at W340 billion, but has more than doubled since.
