The number of international passengers on domestic airlines saw a slight increase in April from a year earlier, although many Chinese continued to avoid travel to Korea amid an unofficial boycott over Seoul's decision to allow deployment of a U.S. Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery here.
A rise in travelers to and from Japan and Southeast Asia offset the drop in Chinese travelers.
"A decline in demand for flights to China was offset by the addition of flights to Japan and Southeast Asia," an official at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation said.
The number of people traveling to and from China dropped from 1.69 million a year earlier to 897,000. However, the number of people traveling to and from Japan rose 30.3 percent from 1.11 million to 1.44 million, while the number of travelers to and from Southeast Asia increased by 23.5 percent from 1.92 million to 2.37 million.
Travelers to the Americas and Europe also rose.
