A growing number of Koreans are taking their summer holidays in June rather than July or August to avoid peak-season crowds and take advantage of cheaper tickets.
Jeju Air analyzed departure data from the Korea Tourism Organization and found that the number of people heading overseas in June increased 12 percent every year from 2012 to 2016. And last June 1.78 million people went overseas, up 29 percent compared from the same month in 2015.
At Hana Tour overseas package tours were up 45 percent on-year with 238,000 customers. Jeju Air has doubled the number of flights to Fukuoka and Saipan in June, but booking rates for the two routes increased between 75 to 80 percent.
A Jeju Air staffer said, "Competition to attract travelers has intensified due to the increase of low-cost carriers. This has coincided with the trend of vacationers seeking to take advantage of less expensive options resulting in air travel demand being more evenly dispersed."
