Russian President Vladimir Putin told President Moon Jae-in's special envoy on Wednesday that he would be willing to mediate with North Korea by sending an emissary to Pyongyang.

Song Young-gil, a Minjoo Party lawmaker, quoted Putin as saying, "The North Korean nuclear issue could never be resolved through war. That's impossible."

"The problem should be solved through dialogue because using sanctions alone has limitations, and it could also work against North Korean people and have humanitarian consequences," Putin added according to Song.

Putin stressed the need to resume the six-party talks to deal with the North Korean nuclear crisis as well as open direct talks between North Korea and the U.S.

He also pledged to talk with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the resumption of dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to Song.
