Uncertainty clouds the future of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin following his omission from the starting roster ahead of this weekend's series against the Chicago Cubs.

Ryu's name was missing from the starting lineup announced by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Wednesday. Instead, Alex Wood, Brandon McCarthy and Clayton Kershaw will start ahead of Ryu, who had been expected to pitch.

Roberts said only that Ryu would pitch in the first half of the season. Contractually, Ryu has the right to refuse a minor league assignment, meaning that the Dodgers cannot remove him from their major league roster without his consent.

Roberts said he is thinking about using Ryu as a long reliever, but added that such a decision would require careful consideration. "There's a potential routine change, and you've got to be sensitive to that," he said.

Ryu has rarely pitched out of the bullpen. Due to elbow surgery he underwent in high school, he is more effective as a starter.
