Hyundai's eco-friendly Ioniq hatchback is garnering a lot of attention abroad as it surpassed last year's total exports in just the first four months of the year.
The carmaker on Tuesday said a whopping 17,202 Ioniqs were exported in the January-April period, more than last year's total of 16,644.
The Ioniq was Hyundai's third-most exported vehicle, after the Avante (66,819) and Accent (42,553). Among Ioniq models, the hybrid model was most popular with 14,035 units shipped, followed by the electric model with 2,793 and the plug-in hybrid with 374.
Since its launch in Europe last year and the United States in March this year, the Ioniq has been selling well abroad. In the U.S. market, it took 8th place in the hybrid sector in April, according to U.S. website hybridcars.com.
In Western Europe it has been steadily selling more than 1,000 units per month since last October, and the number soared to 2,116 in March and 1,957 in April.
