Two presumed human bone fragments have been found in the wreck of the ferry Sewol, which was pulled into dry dock last month.

Workers found the two fragments on the port side on the fourth floor in the stern of the ferry on Wednesday morning, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said. The section has cabins and a lounge and lies next door to the cabins where girl students of Danwon High School were sleeping.

A National Forensic Service official said an examination with the naked eye suggests they are human bones. They are now being scrutinized at the NFS headquarters in Wonju, Gangwon Province.

At the request of the families of victims whose bodies have not yet been recovered, the ministry decided not to publish pictures or say what part of the body the bones came from.

No clues like clothing fibers that could be helpful in identifying the victims have been discovered yet.

DNA tests will probably take about a month, a ministry official said. The NFS is also carefully examining bone fragments retrieved last week from the seabed in the waters off Jindo, where the ferry sank, believing that they are also human.
