One member of a helicopter crew died Monday in the ongoing battle to contain a forest fire that erupted in Korea's eastern Gangwon Province on Saturday.
The chopper was making an emergency landing just before noon when it caught on a high-tension wire and the man, a 47-year-old repairman surnamed Cho, died in hospital.
The fire was thought to have been extinguished by Sunday evening, but strong winds rekindled the embers. Three separate fires including two in Gangwon Province have destroyed more than 30 homes and burned over 150 hectares of forest.
Some 6,300 soldiers along with around a dozen military helicopters have been deployed to help fight the fires near Gangneung, Samcheok and other areas.
