Parents feel that filial duty should consist mostly of emotional support, while their young adult children believe it means financial support and taking care of unwell parents.
Prof. Yoo Gye-sook at Kyunghee University polled 210 college students and 198 parents and asked them to rate five factors -- physical support, emotional support, caregiving for sick parents, economic support, and dutiful behavior like regular visit.
Yoo's team asked them to rate these factors on a scale of one to four and found that parents put the highest value or 3.14 on emotional support and the lowest of 2.56 on economic support.
They also put greater emphasis on dutiful behavior at 2.99 than the young adults (2.77).
But the young respondents rated caregiving for sick parents the most important filial duty at 3.29, followed by economic support at 3.16.
