Study Shows Exercise Increases Happiness in Adolescents

    Adolescents who exercise every week are more likely to be happy and feel less stressed, according to a recent study.

    A research team led by professor Jeon Yong-kwan at Yonsei University conducted the online survey of 370,000 adolescents from 2009 to 2013.

    The study found that those who exercised at least once a week were at least 41 percent more likely to feel happy and at least 26 percent more unlikely to get stressed out, compared to those who got no exercises at all.

    Adolescents who had four days or more of exercise a week were 53 percent more likely of saying they were happy.

    The problem is that Korean youngsters have limited opportunities to engage in physical activities due to the intense pressure to study.

    According to the 2016 OECD statistics, Korean adolescents had 3.5 days a week of exercise for at least one hour a day, which was lower than the OECD average of 3.8 days. They also were among the least happy in the OECD.
