Mourners on Sunday observed the third anniversary of the 2014 ferry disaster that killed over 300 mostly young people.
They paid their respects at an altar in Ansan south of Seoul, where most of the victims attended high school. Mourners wore yellow ribbons, yellow clothes or carried yellow balloons as a sign of respect for the dead.
Organizers set up 5,000 chairs, but they were soon filled and thousands of others paid their respects standing up. They observed a moment of silence as sirens rang across Ansan.
Presidential contenders Moon Jae-in, Ahn Cheol-soo, Yoo Seung-min and Shim Sang-jung were also present.
On Saturday afternoon, some 100,000 people gathered for a candle-light vigil in downtown Seoul.
