Samsung has received 550,000 pre-orders for its Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in just two days, industry sources said Sunday.
The Korean giant started taking pre-orders for the new flagship phones on its website and via three mobile operators on Friday, and it has already sold 5.5 times more than the Galaxy S7 over the same period.
Pre-order customer will be able to use them from April 18, three days before it hits store shelves, if Samsung can cope with the unexpected volume.
Insiders say the good response is largely because they are Samsung's first new model in a long while, and faithful customers have been waiting since their combustible Galaxy Note 7s were recalled last autumn.
But cutting-edge features and design also played their part. The S8 has a screen that covers the entire front of the phone with an 18.5:9 ratio.
Samsung offers customers who pre-order the phones until next Monday W400,000 worth of promotional packages including a warranty for battery changes and Bluetooth speakers (US$1=W1,135).
