Former rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae has sued for libel 45 people who allegedly posted defamatory comments about her on the Internet, police said Friday.
Son announced her retirement in early March, bringing the curtain down on her 17-year career.
When her agency Galaxia SM in February posted the news that the athlete was retiring and would not compete in the Moscow Grand Prix this year, some Internet users responded with malicious messages.
They ridiculed Son's appearance and athletic ability and even accused her of receiving support from Choi Soon-sil, the confidante of ousted president Park Geun-hye and central figure in a massive influence-peddling and corruption scandal.
Galaxia SM said, "Many posted insulting comments, but we are suing only those who went too far."
Son came in fifth at the London Olympics in 2012 and fourth at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
