GM Korea is recalling some 44,000 units of its new Spark subcompact over engine and software issues. It also faces more than half a billion won in penalties (US$1=W1,134).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Sunday that a software problem can cause too much oil to be injected into the Spark's engine, reducing its power. The recall affects units made between last May and this January.
GM is also recalling about 22,000 units of its Malibu sedan, which could result in a slightly bigger fine. The running lights of the sedan can fail to turn on in daylight under certain conditions due to a software problem.
