A growing number of jobseekers are finally lowering their sights and applying to small and mid-sized companies instead of insisting on plum jobs with big conglomerates.
Some surveys suggest that eight out of 10 jobseekers are lowering their sights. Job portal Saramin polled 2,263 jobseekers, and 84 percent said they are willing to work for smaller companies. That is up from only 70.1 percent in 2014.
While 93.9 percent of those with only a high-school diploma said they are willing to try SMEs, the proportion is also 81.6 percent among university graduates and 77.2 percent of those with master's degrees or higher.
Among jobseekers who are open to working for SMEs, 41.3 percent said they would do so if the line of work fits their area of specialization, and 40.6 percent said there are many smaller businesses that are competitive.
Some 20 to 30 percent of respondents said they are considering applying to SMEs simply because they think they have a better chance of getting a job.
Asked about the main criteria for choosing a smaller firm, 59 percent cited salary, followed by welfare and benefits, growth potential and job security. But SMEs typically offer fewer benefits than big conglomerates.
