Online shopping continued to increase in January, with mobile purchases taking up over 50 percent, an all-time high.
According to Statistics Korea on Monday, online transactions totaled some W6 trillion, an increase of 14.5 percent from a year earlier (US$1=W1,156). And smartphone purchases accounted for 58 percent or W3.5 trillion.
But on a month-to-month basis, online sales were down about 3.5 percent in January due to weak consumer sentiment. The biggest portion of online purchases was reservations for travel and accommodation due to more overseas travel over the Lunar New Year holiday.
