Choi Soon-sil, the long-time confidante of President Park Geun-hye, threatened Wednesday to turn to the UN to report what she alleges were abuses of her human rights by prosecutors.
Choi's lawyers claimed that she has been held in isolation for four months while prosecutors investigate her on charges of running an extortion racket out of Cheong Wa Dae with the connivance of the president.
Her lawyer, Lee Kyung-jae, claimed Choi "has not been able to meet anyone other than her lawyers" since her arrest on Oct. 31. "The human rights abuse being committed by the court and prosecution has crossed the line."
Prosecutors have won court permission to prevent Choi from contacting other witnesses, who include more or less everyone she knows, due to the severity of the offenses with which she is charged and evidence of a frantic cover-up. Her appeals have been rejected.
"We plan to take our plea to the UN Human Rights Council if our request continues to be rejected," Lee said.
