Speed skater Lee Seung-hoon won the gold medal in the men's 5,000-m race at the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Obihiro, Japan on Monday.
Shrugging off an injury that marred his training, Lee set a new Asian record of 6:24.32.
Lee hurt his shin early this month when he fell during the men's team pursuit at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Gangneung, which served as a test event for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
The injury required eight stitches and disrupted Lee's training for upcoming competitions, but he was determined to compete.
Blowing away concerns over his physical condition, Lee came up with a remarkable burst of speed in a home-stretch spurt to defend his 5,000-m title, finishing 5.35 seconds ahead of runner-up Ryosuke Tsuchiya of Japan.
Lee broke his own six-year-old Asian record of 6:25.56 set in January 2001.
