The population of Seoul continues to decline as residents relocate to escape the capital's high cost of living.
According to Statistics Korea, last year alone some 140,000 people moved out of Seoul, the most since 1997, when more than 170,000 people relocated.
The exodus gathered pace over the course of 2016. Nearly 24,000 people moved out during the first quarter, and the figure increased steadily to nearly 43,000 in the last quarter.
The government agency attributed the trend to the increasing burden of housing costs in the capital. Additionally, many job seekers are heading to other parts of the country, where work is easier to find.
