Korea ranked tenth in the world in terms of defense spending last year.
In its Military Balance report released on Tuesday, the International Institute for Strategic Studies calculated that Seoul's defense budget for 2016 was roughly US$34 billion.
As with previous years, the U.S. was head-and-shoulders above the rest, spending more than $600 billion. China was second with $145 billion. Behind the world's two superpowers were Russia, Saudi Arabia and the U.K.
The report added that defense spending in Asia was 1.3 times higher than in Europe.
