Gov't to Lower City Speed Limits

The government plans to decrease city speed limits in an effort to reduce casualties from traffic accidents.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Tuesday that it will lower the speed limits from 60 km/h to 50 km/h in downtown areas, while side streets will see a further decrease to 30 km/h.

The announcement is part of the ministry's five-year traffic master plan, which also includes more pedestrian crosswalks.

The changes are set to come as early as next year after consultation with relevant authorities, the ministry said.

It hopes the stricter regulations will reduce the number of accident casualties from 4,294 people last year to around 2,700 by 2021. Pedestrian victims make up about 38 percent of the total.
