The 123-story Lotte World Tower, the capital's tallest building, has finally been given the green light to open for business in April, when the Lotte Group celebrates its 50th anniversary.

A spokesman for the Seoul Metropolitan Government said the city consulted with dozens of related government departments to review whether the skyscraper was built according to regulations.

An advisory panel of 21 experts and neighboring residents checked a total of 188 criteria, from fire protection to environmental factors, before city officials made the final decision.

Construction of the skyscraper began in November 2011, but it has been a bumpy ride, especially when the downstairs mall opened amid several setbacks.

A Lotte staffer claimed the skyscraper will generate 360,000 new jobs. Tourism experts hope it can attract around 4 million tourists a year generating W800 billion in revenues (US$1=W1,146).
