HiteJinro's Chamisul soju had a bumper year in 2016, with sales likely to have topped W1 trillion for the first time, the company said Thursday (US$1=W1,146).
Sales from January to September last year already reached W762.6 billion, up 7.8 percent on-year. Supposing that the trend continued they will have exceeded W1 trillion for the entire year.
Chamisul has been the country's best-selling soju since it was launched 18 years ago. Not every distiller discloses sales data, but Chamisul is estimated to hold a whopping 50 percent of the domestic market.
Some 1.7 billion 360-ml bottles of Chamisul were made last year, according to HiteJinro, which translates into a whopping 42 bottles per Korean adult.
