The Gangbuk district in northern Seoul has the lowest rate of obesity among men and the tony Gangnam area south of the Han River the fewest obese women, according to a study.

The Seoul Institute said Tuesday that the male obesity rate in Gangbuk was 27.5 percent as of 2014, the lowest among the capital's 25 districts.

Songpa had the highest male obesity rate of 36.7 percent, and the average across the city stood at 31.7 percent. Gangnam district boasted the lowest rate of obesity among women at 7.2 percent, followed by Songpa and Seocho in southern Seoul.

Jungnang in northeastern Seoul had the highest obesity rate among women at 22.5 percent, and the average was 16.2 percent, just half the rate among men.

The institute found that the closer people live to subway stations, the lower their chances of obesity as they regularly walk the short distance and use public transport. But in neighborhoods far from subway stations, they drive more and are prone to gaining weight.

The findings were based on health data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
