The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office has indicted seven incumbent and former executives of Volkswagen's Korean office including CEO Johannes Thammer over an emissions-rigging scandal.
The announcement came a year after the Environment Ministry asked prosecutors to investigate Volkswagen for the alleged offenses.
Prosecutors accuse Thammer and other executives of selling cars in Korea even though they were aware of rampant forgery of emissions test data and cheating software in diesel cars. The ensuing investigation revealed that Volkswagen's headquarters in Germany was also involved.
The ministry has canceled the sales permits for 80 Volkswagen and Audi models sold here until they submit the proper paperwork.
