Austere Decorations Herald Austerity Christmas

A big, beautifully decorated tree is usually a must for Christmas, with the whole family taking part in the decorations.

But the prolonged economic slowdown and the resulting austerity in decorating trends have led to small, plain Christmas decorations being favored by Korea's growing army of singles.

Singles who want to create a warm holiday atmosphere without spending too much money often turn to pocket-sized alternatives which fit into their small homes.

One idea is simply to create a kind of line drawing of a Christmas tree out of LED lights in a window or on the wall. A silhouette of a Christmas tree can easily be made by taping or tacking the lights to any flat surface.

Social media like Instagram and Pinterest are flooded with similar simple and handy decoration ideas.

The lights come in various colors, can be made to flash or twinkle, and cost only about W10,000 (US$1=W1,199). Small Christmas ornaments or cherished photos hung on them can be another pleasure to look at.

Other popular items include a poster or a large picture of a Christmas tree on the wall, small tree-shaped green table lamps or a large tree-shaped wall sticker that does not leave any glue residue.
