A second strain of Avian influenza virus in poultry has been found, compounding the challenge for authorities here who have never had to deal with two strains of bird flu at the same time.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Monday the H5N8 strain was found last week at a chicken farm in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. It is less pathogenic, or disease-causing, than the H5N6 strain reported in mid-November.
With new reports of H5N6 still coming in, containing two strains of the virus simultaneously in mid-winter will not be easy, said quarantine officials, who have already culled more than 14 million birds and plan to dispose of 3 million more in the coming days.
