Hybrid cars are sweeping the eco-friendly auto segment in Korea.
In the first 10 months of this year, overall sales of green cars rose by 64 percent on-year to 53,631 units, with hybrids accounting for 94 percent of the sales, or 50,554 units, the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Sunday. The hybrid sales were up 68 percent in the period.
Despite government subsidies, sales of electric vehicles grew just 12 percent to 2,896 units, while plug-in and hydrogen-electric cars sold a mere 161 and 30 units respectively.
"The proportion of hybrid models soared this year due to the launch of competitive models such as Hyundai's Ioniq and Kia's Niro," the association said. "To boost the eco-friendly car market, investment in infrastructure is needed so that sales of electric vehicles and hydrogen models can also grow."
