Prosecutors on Tuesday raided Ewha Womans University, which is suspected of corruption in admitting the daughter of President Park Geun-hye's crony Choi Soon-sil.
Investigators searched some 20 offices at the university in western Seoul as well as the homes of school officials, including former Ewha president Choi Kyung-hee (no relation), who allegedly benefited from several government-funded projects.
She resigned last month in the wake of growing criticism from faculty and students over her attempts to establish a for-profit school in the university's name offering lifelong learning programs.
Choi Kyung-hee has been barred from leaving the country as the investigation continues.
An audit by the Education Ministry showed that Ewha officials disqualified two applicants for admission who had higher scores than Choi Soon-sil's daughter Chung Yoo-ra, who was admitted under brand-new special rules for equestrians (US$1=W1,177).
Prosecutors plan to question the former university president and order Chung to return to Korea and face questioning. She is in Germany, where her mother has billions of won worth of property.
